About the Horton Foote Society
Mission
Organized as a philanthropic organization, the Horton Foote Society promotes the study of the American playwright Horton Foote and his work through general intellectual inquiry and research, specific critical inquiry, academic conferences, popular and academic publications, public lectures, and the public presentation of plays. The purposes for organizing the corporation are educational and literary.
Legal Status
The Horton Foote Society is a non-profit organization incorporated under the laws of the State of Texas. We have recently been granted tax-exempt status under the 501(c)3 provision of the US tax code.
Our History
The Horton Foote Society was established in November 2002 by Marion Castleberry and Scot Lahaie as a means of promoting interest in the academic community to the marvelous contribution that Horton Foote has made to the American theater. Our first annual conference was held 3 - 6 March 2004 at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
Our Future
The governing board plans to host academic conferences and to publish The Horton Foote Review, a journal dedicated to scholarship on Mr. Foote's life and criticism on his many plays. We are also seeking funding to launch an archival preservation project aimed to digitize Horton Foote films.
Governance
The Horton Foote Society was established by a three-person Board of Directors. The Society is governed by this board acting on behalf of its growing membership. The Horton Foote Society is presently accepting nominations for an expanded board of directors. Please contact President Marion Castleberry to nominate either yourself or a colleague. Possible board positions include: President, President Elect, Vice-President in Charge of Publication, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, Graduate Student Liaison, and Members-at-Large.
